Here they are, the Pyramids. One of the Seven Wonders of the World and the planet's oldest tourist attraction. Great Pyramid of Cheops (Khufu) , the Pyramid of Chephren (Khafre) and the Pyramid of Mycerinus (Menkaure).
Melissa is striking a pose on the stones at the Pyramid of Chephren (Khafre).
You can see that Melissa has to hunch over while walking down the passage. You also know that the lights, railings and the steps weren't there when the pyramid was build so you'll have to imagine what it must have been like to go in and out (never mind carrying things) when they were first build.
This is inside of the the Pyramid of Chephren in the first chamber. The stairs lead down to the burial chamber.
For a little baksheesh, I was able to get into the Queens room of the burial chamber. As with the rest of the inside the only thing to see are alcoves and stone.
We finally made it out of the Pyramid of Chephren (weighing about 5 lbs less from sweating) to a fantastic view of the Great Pyramid of Cheops. We then walked over to the Great Pyramid of Cheops (Khufu) which was more impressive the closer you got. Unfortunately the entrance to Cheops was closed so we couldn't go inside.
Todd and I take a moment for a pose by Cheops.
This modern looking building is the Solar Barque Museum right next to Cheops. It was build at this location because is contains the actual location (a large pit) where a solar boat was buried as well as the rebuilt solar boat. Even with that in mind, it still doesn't look like it fits in. The Solar boats were buried so that the king would have transport into the next world.
The very large solar boat.
After the Pyramids, we made it around the corner to see the Sphinx. You can see that they are pretty close to each other. Behind us is also Cheops.
Just one of those fun travel type pictures.
Our tour guide (Achmid) if filling us in on some history of the Sphinx.
A nice profile of the Sphinx. During the period of the Ottoman Empire the Turks used the Sphinx for target practice (other sources say that it was Napoleon), and its nose and beard were blasted off (what a shame!).
